Hair is the fine thread-like strands growing from the skin of humans. Hair is made of a tough protein called keratin. A hair follicle anchors each hair into the skin. The hair bulb forms the base of the hair follicle. In the hair bulb, living cells divide and grow to build the hair shaſt. Blood vessels nourish the cells in the hair bulb, delivering hormones that modify hair growth and structure at different times of life

Hair is very much influenced by human health i.e. metabolic processes, work of endocrine and central nervous systems. Fatigue, stress, nervousness or hormone changes may impact hair growth or even colour changes. Strict diets, poor nutritional habits may result in thin hair, discolouration or hair loss and slow growth. Therefore, intake of essential nutrients like biotin, copper, selenium and zinc is important for healthy hair

It is reported that Biotin, Selenium and Zinc help to maintain normal hair condition and Copper contributes to normal hair pigmentation, alongside Vitamin C which helps to protect cells against Oxidative Stress

BIOTIN

Biotin is a water-soluble B group vitamin. Research suggests that Biotin could be synthesised by intestinal bacteria. However, it is still controversial if and how much bacterial Biotin can contribute to the body’s requirement for Biotin. Therefore, Biotin must be acquired from food.

Biotin occurs in many foods in very variable amounts. Rich sources are liver, kidney, egg yolk, some vegetables like soybeans, nuts, spinach, mushrooms and lentils, lean meat, fruit, cereals and bread.

Major food sources of Vitamin C are plants such as citrus fruits, soſt fruits and green vegetables. Animal tissues also contain Vitamin C, with kidney and liver representing good sources

Why Vitamin C is important?

  • Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which helps to protect human cells against Oxidative Stress. Free radicals produced in biochemical processes of the body or due to external factors (radiation, pollution) cause Oxidative Stress, which is harmful for all cells. Hair follicles are also sensitive to Oxidative Stress
